Greater New Orleans Amateur Athletes of the Month
Fournette, a graduate of St. Augustine High School, led the Tigers to a perfect 4-0 month of October, running for 721 yards on 103 carries (7.0 yards per carry) as he closed the month as the nation's leading rusher. He also tallied seven touchdowns in those four games. Fournette opened the month by blasting Eastern Michigan for 233 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown run, He followed that with a 158-yard, three-touchdown effort, including an 87-yard score, in a 45-24 win over South Carolina. That game was played in Baton Rouge due to extensive flooding in South Carolina and after the game Fournette announced that he would auction his game jersey for funs to benefit the state - it ended up selling for over $100,000, a record for a game-worn jersey. In a critical win over No. 8 Florida on Oct. 17, the sophomore ran for 180 yards and two more scores before closing the month with a 150-yard performance in a win over Western Kentucky. That game marked his ninth straight 100-yard outing, matching the LSU school record.
Fournette had impressive competition for the honor. Destrehan junior quarterback Kohen Granier led the Wildcats to a perfect 5-0 month of October, throwing for 832 yards and 14 touchdowns with just one interception for the month; Sci Martin a defensive standout for McDonogh 35 football recorded an impressive 13.5 sacks in the month of September, following that up with 13 QB drops in October; Corey Williamson, a sophomore running back, helped lead St. Paul's to a 5-0 record in the month of October, rushing for 714 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
