Duvio, a native of Kenner and a graduate of John Curtis, earned All-America recognition after finishing third in the pole vault at the NCAA Championships with a mark of 18 feet, one-half inch (5.5 meters). A sophomore, he is just the second Stanford pole vaulter to finish in the top three since 1934. Duvio also finished ninth in the pole vault with a mark of 17 feet, eight and a half inches at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 27 at the University of Oregon.
Duvio also won the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month honor in June of 2013, when he Gatorade Track & Field Athlete of the Year for Louisiana and qualified for the Pan Am Games.
Two other athletes were also nominated for the June honor. Tulane track star Devon Breaux competed in the NCAA Outdoor National Championships in the long jump, placing 19th to become the first men's Tulane track and field athlete to earn All-American honors (honorable mention) since 2002. Daniel Martinez, a senior-to-be for the UNO baseball squad, was automatic on the mound for the Acadiana Cane Cutters of the Texas Collegiate League, posting a 5-0 record in six appearances (five starts) with a 1.48 ERA and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 27-5. He was selected to play in the league's July 7 All-Star Game. Martinez is a graduate of Newman High School.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
