Tuesday, February 24, 2015

LSU, ranked No. 16 in the country, turned in an outstanding performance to capture the title at the fifth annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship at the English Turn Golf & Country Club. The Tigers wrapped up the championship on Tuesday, holding off six other teams ranked in the nation's Top 25, as well as No. 31 Tulane, the host of the event, which finished in a tie for fourth place.

"It's unbelievable having English Turn, the Allstate Sugar Bowl and us in a partnership is something just that as a college golf coach is a dream come true," said Tulane golf coach Lorne Don. "The golf course is in magnificent shape and it's just something to bring a field like this to your home course is really special."

LSU led from wire-to-wire to claim the 2015 team title. No. 4 UCLA, the defending champion, and Florida tied for the runner-up spot and Tulane and No. 10 Arizona each tied for fourth place. The LSU duo of Madelene Sagstrom and Caroline Nistrup tied for first place and finished as co-champions.

The Green Wave placed two players among the Top-10 golfers as junior Emily Penttila finished in seventh place and classmate Silvia Garces was ninth overall.

New Orleans is the 11th-oldest host city on the PGA Tour and English Turn was a regular stop on the Tour when it hosted the Zurich Classic from 1989-2004 and again in 2006.  Past winners of the Zurich Classic include Billy Casper, Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus, Davis Love III, David Toms, and Vijay Singh.
