Optimist sailors are assigned to a "Fleet" according to age. The "White Fleet" includes skippers who are under 10 on the opening day of the Regatta. "Blue Fleet" skippers are 11 or 12 years old and "Red Fleet" skippers are 13-15 years old.
The top "Red Fleet" sailor was Teddy Nicolosi of St. Thomas Yacht Club (U.S. Virgin Islands), who tallied a total of 15 points for the overall title as well. The top "Red Fleet" female was Carmen Cowles from Larchmont (N.Y.) Yacht Club.
In "Blue Fleet" action, Thomas Hall from Annapolis (Md.) Yacht Club won the championship with 35 points. The top "Blue Fleet" female was Yumi Yoshiyasu from Houston Yacht Club, who earned that title for the second straight year.
Kaitlyn Hamilton from the Carolina Yacht Club in Charleston, S.C., was the top female finisher in the "White Fleet," while Stephen baker from Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami was the top boy in the youngest division.
Sugar Bowl Regattas have been held on Lake Ponchartrain every year since 1935, except during World War II. The original sailing competition is divided up into two separate phases, spread out over four two-day periods, usually weekends, beginning in late November and concluding on New Year's Eve.
