Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO High School Basketball Tournament Tips Off
Wednesday, December 4, 2013
The Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament tipped off on Wednesday night with eight boys' games at four different New Orleans high schools. Action continues tonight with eight more games at the same locations. The semifinals will be played at Jesuit High School on Friday evening at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The finals will take place on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Brother Martin. This year marks the 60th year of the tournament as well as the sixth with the Allstate Sugar Bowl as the sponsor.
In the most exciting match-up of the opening night, Jesuit's Foster Moreau capped a 21-point, eight-rebound effort by getting fouled after a key offensive board in the final seconds. He drained both free throws to give the Blue Jays a 54-52 win over Lusher.
East Jefferson, which closed last year as the top-ranked team in New Orleans, topped St. Thomas Aquinas, 62-43, as All-Metro guard Shaquille Preston, who has signed with UT-Chattanooga, tallied 13 points and three steals. Other top scorers included Brother Martin's Jordan Cornish, a Tennessee signee, who piled up 24 points in a 74-38 rout of Shaw; Country Day's J.C. Younger with 18 points in a 55-41 win over Holy Cross; Troy Green from East St. John, who registered 18 points in a 66-49 triumph over St. Aug; Newman's Peter Drennan, who tallied 21 points in a 55-49 win over De La Salle; and Shawn Maher from Hahnville, who led the way with 13 points in a 48-31 decision over Rummel.

Last year's CYO Tourney was capped by a thrilling finish as Newman's Kyle Lewis scored on a putback as time expired in overtime to lift the Greenies to a 58-57 victory over Jesuit in the championship game. It was the first CYO Tourney title for Newman. Trailing by one with five seconds to go, Kendall Lewis was off the mark with an 18-foot jumper, but twin brother Kyle gathered the rebound and rattled home the game-winner to shock the Blue Jays. Duke Douglas had 16 points and 11 boards for Newman to cap an outstanding weekend and earn tournament MVP honors. Joining Douglas on the all-tournament team were Matt Felger (Jesuit), Edwin Winston (East St. John), Greg White-Pittman (Holy Cross), Jordan Cornish (Brother Martin) and Kyle Lewis (Newman).
