SEC Places Four in Top Seven of Initial BCS Standings

Sunday, October 14, 2012

Undefeated Alabama, ranked No. 1 in both polls, is also No. 1 in the initial BCS Standings for 2012. The Crimson Tide is followed by SEC rival Florida at No. 2. Oregon checks in at No. 3, followed by No. 4 Kansas State and No. 5 Notre Dame. The SEC also has LSU (No. 6) and South Carolina (No. 7) in lofty positions. No. 8 Oregon State gives the Beaver State two programs in the top 10, while No. 9 Oklahoma is a second Big 12 team. USC, the third Pac-12 team, rounds out the top-10.

In addition to the four top-10 teams, the SEC has No. 11 Georgia and No. 12 Mississippi State, as well as No. 18 Texas A&M, giving it seven in the rankings. The powerhouse league has two major showdowns coming up this weekend as the seventh-ranked Gamecocks play at No. 2 Florida in another Steve Spurrier return to the swamp, and the sixth-ranked LSU Tigers travel to College Station to take on the Aggies for the first time as SEC foes.

The Big 12 matches the SEC with seven ranked teams. That league's top showdown this weekend will be fifth-ranked Kansas State heading to Morgantown to take on No. 13 West Virginia. That game was expected to be a possible top-five showdown until the Mountaineers were upset by Texas Tech on the road - that victory lifted the Red Raiders to No. 17 overall.

The Pac-12 has four ranked teams, followed by the Big East with three. The ACC has two schools in the standings while the Mountain West has one representative in No. 22 Boise State. Notre Dame is the lone independent school in the initial standings.
