Allstate Sugar Bowl Hosts NCAA Youth Football Clinic

Thursday, July 29, 2010

On July 28, approximately 350 youth football players from New Orleans and the surrounding areas showed up at Harrell Stadium to attend a free half-day clinic led by coaches and student-athletes from various colleges around the state. The clinic was hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl and R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl in partnership with NCAA Football's Youth Initiative.

This clinic was one of 22 being held nationwide over the summer, giving participants the opportunity to meet and work with college coaches and student-athletes from Nicholls State, Southeastern and UL-Lafayette to complete on-field agility drills, offensive and defensive training.

"This is such a special chance for youth in our area to take part in something unique, learning from top student-athletes and collegiate coaches," said Paul Hoolahan - CEO, Allstate Sugar Bowl. "NCAA Football puts on a first class event and we're thrilled to have partnered with them over the past four years."

"We're excited to join other bowls nationwide in providing young players the unique opportunity to learn from top student-athletes and collegiate coaches," said Billy Ferrante - executive director, R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

"This Youth Day Clinic is an opportunity for youth football players to learn not only valuable athletic skills, but also the invaluable character-building and sportsmanship lessons from one of the area's top intercollegiate football coaches," said Bob Vecchione - chair, NCAA Football Youth Initiatives Committee.  "We are proud to be bringing this event to New Orleans and hope the young men and women who participate in the clinic incorporate the lessons into their daily lives."

NCAA Football's Youth Initiative is a $1.5 million, three year investment that began in New Orleans in 2007.  Through this program, NCAA Football strives to attract more youth participants to the game, provide them with additional motivation to pursue higher education opportunities, help them develop the necessary skills to be successful on and off the field, and help to establish a new base of lifelong NCAA Football fans.
