Kristen Nuss has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for March after leading her Mount Carmel squad to the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Class 5A Girls Basketball Championship. The monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Greater New Orleans Amateur Athletes of the Month
Nuss, a senior at Mount Carmel, capped a remarkable career by earning Class 5A Tournament MVP honors and being selected to the Class 5A Top 28 All-Tournament Team. In the semifinals and finals, she had 27 points, 21 assists, seven steals and nine rebounds. She led the second-seeded Cubs to a 68-48 win over Natchitoches Central in the semifinals and a 59-48 victory over Denham Springs in the championship game. During the month of March, she was also named to the Times-Picayune All-Metro Team and the Clarion-Herald All-Elite Team.
Nuss' closest competition for the March honor came from another girls' basketball state champion - sophomore Kourtney Weber averaged 24.5 points and eight rebounds as she led Ursuline Academy to the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Class 4A state title. Also nominated for the honor were two baseball players and a tennis star. Hunter Hope hit .343 (23-for-67) with five doubles, five home runs and 15 RBI and 20 runs for the Tulane baseball team, while Daniel Lahare hit .581 with 13 runs batted in and 18 runs in 13 games for the Delgado Baseball squad. Xavier University's Kyle Montrel was 5-0 in singles and 5-0 in doubles during a month in which the Gold Rush tennis team was 5-0 in dual matches with three victories against NAIA top-10 teams.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
