  • Started boxing at the age of 12 and at the age of 14 (1942), won the National AAU bantamweight title over Eddie Dames.
  • Defeated former champions and contenders Phil Terranova, Johnny Bratton, Tippy Larkin, John L. Davis and Gene Burton on his way to a 73-10-6 pro log.
  • Posted a record of 67-1 before losing a thrilling match in Chicago against Sugar Ray Robinson for the World Welterweight Championship in 1948.
  • Retired from boxing after suffering a TKO defeat to Joey Giambra in 1953.
  • Born Jan. 19, 1927 and died Jan. 11, 2009 at the age of 81.
