The Optimist Midwinters are expected to include 225-250 sailors and their families in town for the event. Optimist sailors are assigned to a "Fleet" according to age. The "White Fleet" includes skippers who are under 10 on the opening day of the Regatta. "Blue Fleet" skippers are 11 or 12 years old and "Red Fleet" skippers are 13-15 years old.

In last weekend's Allstate Sugar Bowl Regatta action, Bishop England High School from Charleston, S.C., captured the 2010 Great Oaks High School Championship. Placing second and winning the Babs & Larry White Trophy for the top first-time team was White Bear Lake High School from Minnesota. Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit High School took third place. The Silver Fleet was won by Richmond Hill (Ga.), followed by Country Day (New Orleans, La.) and St. Patrick Catholic (Gulfport, Miss.).

The Great Oaks Regatta featured 38 high school teams and over 150 sailors. Each school sailed one boat with two sailors. The school with the lowest combined score from the full slate of races was declared the winner.

The Sugar Bowl has sponsored regatta events on Lake Ponchartrain every year since 1935, except during World War II. The original sailing competition is divided up into two separate phases, spread out over four two-day periods, usually weekends, beginning in late November and concluding on New Year's Eve.
