Semifinals Set For Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball

The semifinals are set for the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Classic as Rummel, St. Augustine, Ellender and Jesuit will meet at Jesuit High school on Friday evening. The first semifinal (6 p.m.) pits Rummel against St. Augustine, while Ellender battles Jesuit at 7:30 p.m. The event's championship game will be played on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Jesuit High School.

Thursday (Day Two) Results:

The thriller from the evening was an overtime showdown in which Rummel held off Country Day, 51-46. The teams were tied at 45 after regulation, but six free throws clinched the victory for the Raiders. Country Day star Matt Derenbecker scored a game-high 28 points, but it was not enough as Casey Webb missed just two shots for Rummel and finished with 19 points. Hunter Barocco, who made two game-clinching free throws with 11 seconds to go, added 16 points for the Raiders.

St. Augustine upended Brother Martin, 64-59, for a key road victory. The Purple Knights were led by 21 points from Sydie London while Eldridge Moore had 14 and Javan Felix scored 13. Brother Martin had a huge game from Patrick Swilling, who poured in a tournament-best 36 points, including nine three-pointers, in the losing effort.

Josh Dudley scored 19 points to lead Jesuit into the semifinals with a 56-31 win over Ehret. Alec Melendreras scored 14 points and Colby keifer added 10 for the Blue Jays. Elfrid Payton led the Patriots with 11 points.

Trevon Lewis scored 22 points to lead Ellender to a 57-43 victory over Hahnville. Joe Wheaton and Kardero Dixon each added 10 points in the win. Jauries Thomas led Hahnville with 20 points while Warren Lebeauf added 12.

The semifinals are the only Friday action as all consolation bracket games will take place on Saturday.

This year marks the 56th year of the tournament and the second year that the event has been sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

In addition to the basketball action, at halftime of the championship game (Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Jesuit High School), the late Johnny Altobello will be honored. Altobello won the first seven CYO tournaments as the coach at DeLaSalle and St. Aloysius (now Brother Martin). The championship trophy for the CYO Tournament will now bear his name. His family and representatives from DeLaSalle and Brother Martin will be on hand for that half-time presentation.
