Monday, December 2, 2013
The Allstate Sugar Bowl's second regatta event of the year was contested this past weekend on Lake Pontchartrain. The Optimist Midwinters featured over 100 sailors from nine to 15 years of age.
Optimist sailors are assigned to a "Fleet" according to age. The "White Fleet" includes skippers who are under 10 on the opening day of the Regatta. "Blue Fleet" skippers are 11 or 12 years old and "Red Fleet" skippers are 13-15 years old.
The top "Red Fleet" sailor was Ian Moran from Edgewater Yacht Club in Cleveland, Ohio, who tallied a total of 14 points for the overall title as well. The top "Red Fleet" female was Emma Cowles from Larchmont (N.Y.) Yacht Club.
In "Blue Fleet" action, Ricky Welch from Long Beach (Miss.) Yacht Club won the championship with 45 points. The top "Blue Fleet" female was Yumi Yoshiyasu from Houston Yacht Club.
Mia Nicolosi from St. Thomas Yacht Club in the U.S. Virgin Islands was the top female finisher in the "White Fleet," while Justin Callahan from Naples (Fla.) sailing Center was the top boy in the youngest division.
Sugar Bowl Regattas have been held on Lake Ponchartrain every year since 1935, except during World War II. The original sailing competition is divided up into two separate phases, spread out over four two-day periods, usually weekends, beginning in late November and concluding on New Year's Eve.
