Thursday, April 18, 2013

Mason Katz, the standout baseball star for Louisiana State University, has been selected as the March Amateur Athlete of the Month for Greater New Orleans as selected in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Katz topped a very impressive field for the honor.

The senior had a sensational March for the second-ranked LSU baseball team. He batted .455 (35-of-77) with 11 home runs, 38 runs batted in and 19 runs scored in 20 games - 19 of them wins for the Tigers. He also added four doubles and two triples. He was named Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week and SEC Player of the Week on both March 18 and April 1. In addition, he was named LSWA Hitter of the Week three times (March 11, March 18 and April 1). Katz led LSU to a 26-2 record through the first half of the regular season - LSU's best record through 28 games since 1986 team also went 26-2. The Jesuit High product leads the SEC in HR (13) and RBI (60), and he ranks second in the nation in RBI.

While Katz had a tremendous month of March, he was far from a slam dunk for the honor. Also considered were high school track stars Dominique Clegget (Cabrini H.S.) and Marquita Stalbert (McDonogh #35), UNO javelin standout Matti Mortimore, Country Day High basketball star Scott Plaisance and Destrehan baseball  standout Tanner Hayes.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
