Connors, who was a four-time all-conference performer and an All-American at Southeastern, led Team USA to a Gold Medal at the 2011 International Federation of American Football Championship played at Innsbruck and Vienna, Austria in July. The United States team had just six days of practice before the tournament, which included European Football League clubs that had been together for much of the year in preparation for the event. Despite the lack of practice, the U.S. held its four opponents (Australia, Canada, Mexico and Germany) to a total of just 21 points, while recording 176 points of its own.
The Gold Medal game against Canada was played before an estimated crowd of 20,000 at Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium. Team USA broke open a 7-0 contest in the second quarter, scoring 30 points to build a 37-7 halftime lead on route to a 50-7 triumph. Connors led the U.S. in tackles in the Championship game.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
