Thursday, January 27, 2011

Tulane University basketball star Kendall Timmons has been named the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for December. Timmons edged junior guard Javan Felix from St. Augustine High School in balloting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Timmons (pictured right at July 2011 banquet with Sugar Bowl President Lance Africk) helped guide Tulane to the program's best start since the 1994-95 season by averaging 19.8 points and 10.5 rebounds in a 5-1 month of December for the Green Wave. The sophomore forward scored 15 or more points in all six games the Greenies played in the month, including pouring in a career-high 33 points and grabbing a career-best 19 rebounds in a victory over Lamar on Dec. 30. His 33 points was the most by a Tulane player since 2001 and earned him Conference USA Player of the Week honors.

Felix, meanwhile, led St. Aug to a perfect 13-0 start and the top ranking in the state of Louisiana. He guided the Purple Knights to team titles in the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Tournament and the Newman Invitational - an event in which he earned MVP honors.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
