More Allstate Sugar Bowl Regatta Action This Weekend
Friday, December 3, 2010
The Allstate Sugar Bowl will sponsor more regatta action this weekend as its PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet) and High School Regattas will be contested on Saturday and Sunday on Lake Ponchartrain. The PHRF Regatta is being hosted by the New Orleans Yacht Club, while the High School Regatta is being hosted by the Southern Yacht Club.
Fans can watch both regattas from the seawall on Lake Ponchartrain.
The PHRF Regatta will feature 35-40 boats, while the High School Regatta will have 10-12 teams, primarily from the local area.
The PHRF and Sugar Bowl High School Regattas are part of the original slate of annual Sugar Bowl activities, dating back to the start of the organization in 1934. The Sugar Bowl has sponsored regatta events on Lake Ponchartrain every year since its inception, except during World War II.
This is the third weekend of regatta action for the Sugar Bowl. Over Thanksgiving, the Optimist Midwinters attracted nearly 250 sailors from 10-15 years old. On Nov. 20-21, the Great Oaks Regatta featured 38 high school teams and over 150 sailors.
