Monday, January 11, 2010
The Allstate Sugar Bowl will be the title sponsor of the University of New Orleans' annual intercollegiate men's golf tournament beginning this Sunday, Feb. 21 and continuing through Feb. 23. UNO and 14 other Division I programs will compete in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Mardi Gras Invitational Golf Tournament at the TPC Louisiana in Avondale.
"We want to thank the Allstate Sugar Bowl for their support of our athletics program, and specifically this year's Mardi Gras Invitational," said UNO director of golf Chris McCarter. "We hope this is the start of a long-term relationship."
"We're pleased to partner with UNO in hosting the Allstate Sugar Bowl Mardi Gras Invitational," said Paul Hoolahan, CEO of the Allstate Sugar Bowl. "We expect this to be a great event that will showcase our city and provide a competitive platform for some of the top collegiate golf talent in the country."
The Mardi Gras Invitational is the latest amateur sporting event in the New Orleans area to be sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. In addition to its prominent position in postseason college football, the Bowl also sponsors annual events in basketball, lacrosse, sailing (regatta), soccer, tennis, volleyball and track and field.
In addition to the host Privateers, this year's field includes Arkansas-Little Rock, Austin Peay, Campbell, Centenary, Liberty, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Nicholls State, North Carolina State, San Diego, Southeastern Louisiana, Troy and Wichita State.
UNO heads into the spring portion of its schedule ranked No. 51 in the Golfweek Division I rankings, its highest ever, and No. 57 in the Golfstat rankings. Four other tournament teams are ranked in the Golfstat top 60 - N.C. State (26), San Diego (46), SLU (48) and Wichita State (49).
N.C. State's Matt Hill is the defending NCAA individual champion and won the 2009 Jack Nicklaus Award as the nation's top intercollegiate golfer.
McCarter also said that a limited number of spots remain for the tournament's College-Am on Sunday, Feb. 21. For more information, contact the UNO golf office at 504-280-7339.
