Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Action Tips Off

Opening day action of the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament wrapped up with Country Day, Brother Martin, Ellender, Jesuit, Rummel, St. Augustine, Hahnville and Ehret all earning victories. Those eight schools advance in winners bracket action on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The losing teams will be in action at 6 p.m. The event's championship game will be played on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Jesuit High School. Semifinal action will also take place at Jesuit (Friday, 6 and 7:30 p.m.).

This year marks the 56th year of the tournament and the second year that the event has been sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Wednesday Opening Round Results:
Country Day 65, St. Charles 44 (at Rummel HS)
Ellender 64, Shaw 52 (at Shaw HS)
Jesuit 53, St. Paul's 49 (at Jesuit HS)
Brother Martin 55, St. Thomas Aquinas 44 (at Brother Martin HS)
Rummel 55, Karr 45 (at Rummel HS)
St. Augustine 57, Holy Cross 42 (at Brother Martin HS)
Hahnville 48, Higgins 39 (at Shaw HS)
Ehret 55, Slidell 48 (at Jesuit HS)

Rummel's Amani Thomas tallied 18 points and eight rebounds while Casey Wage scored 13 in the Raiders' 55-45 win over Karr. Karr was led by Rodney Dixon with 15 points and Jimmy Duplessis with 10.

Matt Derenbecker scored 25 points with four blocks and three steals to lead Country Day to a 65-44 win over St. Charles. Colin Hind and Nick Hansel scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Cajuns. The Comets were paced by 14 points from Birch Matus and 13 from Taylor Peytavin.

Troy Deemer and Ryan Berger each scored 14 points to lead Brother Martin to a 55-44 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. Shane Rillieux added 12. Stephen Wronkoski led St. Thomas Aquinas with 20 points.

St. Augustine topped Holy Cross, 57-42, behind 11 points from Eldridge Moore and 10 from Brandon Lain. Joel Pinchon led Holy Cross with 22 points.

Warren Lebeauf's 10 points led Hahnville in a 48-39 win over Higgins. Antoine Craig's 13 points were tops for Higgins.

Trevon Lewis scored 19 points and Kardero Dixon tallied 16 to lead Ellender to a 64-52 over Shaw. The Eagles were led by Derrick Ellis' 16 points.

Brady Hadden paced Jesuit with 17 points and Nick Varisco added 10 to lead the Blue Jays to a 53-49 win over St. Paul's. Connor Vallette and Jonathan Schoene each scored eight for the Wolves.

Ehret defeated Slidell, 55-48, as Eldrid Payton collected 18 points. Nicholas Abrahm led Slidell with 13 points and Joseph Gale added 11.

In addition to the basketball action, at halftime of the championship game (Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Jesuit High School), the late Johnny Altobello will be honored. Altobello won the first seven CYO tournaments as the coach at DeLaSalle and St. Aloysius (now Brother Martin). The championship trophy for the CYO Tournament will now bear his name. His family and representatives from DeLaSalle and Brother Martin will be on hand for that half-time presentation.
