McCollum began a stretch of All-American linemen at Tulane when he earned such honors in 1939 while leading the Green Wave to the 1940 Sugar Bowl.

His dominating play at tackle earned him consensus All-America honors, one of only four players in school history to reach that status.

After Tulane and a stint in the military, played two seasons in the All-American Football Conference with the New York Yankees (1946) and the Chicago Rockets (1947).

Inducted into the Tulane Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981.
