Brother Martin and East Jefferson to Meet in Championship of Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Hoops Tourney

Friday, December 6, 2013

The Brother Martin and East Jefferson boys' basketball teams will meet on Saturday evening at 7:30 at Brother Martin to play for the championship of the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament. This is the 60th year of the tournament.

In Friday evening's first semifinal, Brother Martin overcame a strong defensive effort by Hahnville to win, 57-50. Hahnville used a box-and-one to try and slow Brother Martin's star guard Jordan Cornish. Cornish, who has signed with Tennessee, still finished with 16 points while his teammates stepped up as well in the victory.

East Jefferson, the top-rated team in the New Orleans metro area, snagged the other spot in the title game by pulling away from previously undefeated East St. John, 80-68. Curtiss Anderson led East Jefferson with 16 points, 17 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Last year's CYO Tourney was capped by a thrilling finish as Newman's Kyle Lewis scored on a putback as time expired in overtime to lift the Greenies to a 58-57 victory over Jesuit in the championship game. It was the first CYO Tourney title for Newman. Trailing by one with five seconds to go, Kendall Lewis was off the mark with an 18-foot jumper, but twin brother Kyle gathered the rebound and rattled home the game-winner to shock the Blue Jays. Duke Douglas had 16 points and 11 boards for Newman to cap an outstanding weekend and earn tournament MVP honors. Joining Douglas on the all-tournament team were Matt Felger (Jesuit), Edwin Winston (East St. John), Greg White-Pittman (Holy Cross), Jordan Cornish (Brother Martin) and Kyle Lewis (Newman).
