John Curtis Hoops Star Malik Morgan Named Athlete of the Month for December

Malik Morgan, a senior star for the John Curtis boys basketball team, has been named the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for December. He was selected in balloting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

In the month of December, Morgan averaged 24 points, eight rebounds and four assists per game to lead the Patriots to an undefeated start of their season. The 6-3 shooting guard was the MVP of the Lusher Tournament as well as the Country Day Classic. He made the all-tournament team for the Holy Cross Tournament after scoring 27 points against McDonogh 35 and 33 against Salmen - his 33 points in the Salmen game came in just three quarters of action as he left early with a sprained ankle.

Through Tuesday, Curtis had posted a season mark of 26-3 and was in the hunt for the top seed for the Class 2A state tournament. The Patriots shared the District 10-2A title with Riverside Academy.

In a January game in the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic, the senior guard set a tournament record with 36 points in a victory over Boys & Girls High School from Brooklyn, N.Y. Morgan will attend LSU in the fall.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
