May Athlete of the Month Honors Shared by Dorsey and Gibbs Tuesday, May 31, 2011
Greater New Orleans Amateur Athletes of the Month Dorsey (below left at July 2011 banquet with Sugar Bowl President Lance Africk) had a phenomenal winning high jump of six feet, 11 inches at the Class 5A state track meet for Chalmette High School. He also finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 47 feet, 10 and three-quarter inches, and fifth in the long jump at 22 feet, five and a half inches. He recorded 20 of Chalmette's 21 team points.
Also nominated for the May honor was Jesuit track star Jarvis Harris, who was the highest scoring athlete in the Class %A track meet, including wins in the triple jump and the 300-meter hurdles. The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. -www.AllstateSugarBowl.org- |
