The Week in Review Here's a brief look at the highlights of the seventh week of the college football season, a week which featured three top 10 teams losing, including the top-ranked team in the nation falling for the second week in a row, and eight Top-25 teams losing. The rankings used in this recap are the AP rankings from prior to the games.
UPSET SPECIALS #18 Wisconsin 31, #1 Ohio State 18: The Badgers jump ahead fast before Ohio State battles back, but Wisconsin responds to end the Buckeyes' one-week rein at the top of the polls. Wisconsin is now 26-3 in its last 29 night games while Ohio State had its eight-game road winning streak against ranked foes snapped. Texas 20, #5 Nebraska 13: The Longhorns have been left for dead, but they upend the home-standing Huskers, their sixth straight win over Nebraska, by shutting down star QB Taylor Martinez (63 passing yards, 34 rushing yards). Kentucky 31, #10 South Carolina 28: Impressive comeback victory for the Wildcats, who score 21 unanswered points in the second half to shock the Gamecocks. South Carolina had won 10 straight over Kentucky and Steve Spurrier had never lost to the Wildcats in 17 games. Hawaii 27, #19 Nevada 21: The Wolf Pack hasn't won at Hawaii since 1948 and nothing changed on Saturday as the final game of the night saw yet another Top-25 team go down as quarterback Bryant Moniz threw three TD passes for the Warriors. Mississippi State 10, #22 Florida 7: Urban Meyer loses three in a row for the first time at Florida as former Gator offensive coordinator Dan Mullen orchestrates an impressive upset; the Bulldogs first win in Gainesville since 1965. Mississippi State improves to 5-2 on the year. Washington 35, #24 Oregon State 34: For the second time in three weeks, Washington wins on the final play of the game - this time, Jake Locker throws a go-ahead TD pass in the second overtime and after Beavers' star Jacquizz Rodgers scores his own TD, OSU goes for the two-point conversion and the win, but the pass to the end zone falls incomplete.
TASTY TURNOVERS #7 Auburn 65, #12 Arkansas 43: A wild game in the SEC as Auburn has its first 60-point SEC game since 1970, but defense was actually key as the Tigers have two second-half interceptions and return a fumble for a touchdown. Arkansas had a solid effort by backup quarterback Tyler Wilson in relief of Ryan Mallett, who left the game with a concussion. #15 Iowa 38, Michigan 28: The Hawkeyes force four turnovers and hold off a Michigan rally after Wolverine quarterback Denard Robinson leaves the game with an injury. #16 Florida State 24, Boston College 19: Florida State overcomes four turnovers to hold off Boston College in ACC action; the key play was an end-around by Bert Reed for a 42-yard fourth-quarter touchdown to close the scoring. #17 Arizona 24, Washington State 7: The Wildcats also fit in the below category, but turnovers were the key in this one as Arizona picks off two passes and recovers two Cougar fumbles, as it wins despute losing standout QB Nick Foles to injury.
SINGLE-DIGIT DEFENSES #3 Boise State 48, San Jose State 0: The Broncos simply destroy the Spartans, piling up 529 yards of offense and 32 first downs while holding their foe to 93 total yards and five first downs. #4 TCU 31, BYU 3: The top-ranked Horned Frog defense might be disappointed; after posting back-to-back shutouts, they allowed a field goal this week - but held BYU to just 147 yards.
#6 Oklahoma 52, Iowa State 0: DeMarco Murray scored three times to become the Sooners' career record for touchdowns while the Oklahoma defense holds the Cyclones to just 192 yards. #11 Utah 30, Wyoming 6: Despite throwing three interceptions, the Utes have little trouble with Wyoming, holding the Cowboys scoreless until the fourth quarter. #13 Michigan State 26, Illinois 6: Illinois' 20th-ranked defense holds the Spartans to under 100 rushing yards, but Kirk Cousins leads Michigan State to 23 unanswered points and the defense shuts down the Fighting Illini. #21 Missouri 30, Texas A&M 9: In its first road game of the year, Missouri's defense continues to impress as the A&M offense continues to struggle; Tigers are 6-0 for the fifth time in school history. #25 West Virginia 20, USF 6: The Mountaineers had lost three of four to the Bulls, but this time they hold USF to just 202 yards while picking off three passes.
10-SPOT DEFENSE #8 Alabama 23, Ole Miss 10: The Rebels came in averaging an SEC-best 37 points per game, but those numbers didn’t come against defenses like Alabama’s, which held them to just 239 yards. #9 LSU 32, McNeese State 10: The Tiger offense remains stagnant (they passed for just 104 yards on Saturday), but FCS foe McNeese never truly had a shot despite giving a solid effort.
STAR YOU MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF #20 Oklahoma State 34, Texas Tech 17: Cowboy wide receiver Justin Blackmon is establishing himself as one of the most electrifying players in the country. He snagged 10 passes for 207 yards including a 62-yard TD catch in the third quarter on Saturday and now has gone over 100 yards receiving in every game this year. Saturday's win was Oklahoma State's first in Lubbock since 1944.
INTO THE RANKINGS (with updated rankings) #22 Texas 20, #14 Nebraska: Mack Brown and the Longhorns were out of the polls for two weeks, but showed they will stay play a major role in the Big 12 picture after upending Big 12 North favorite Nebraska. #23 Virginia Tech 52, Wake Forest 21: After losing two straight to open the season, the Hokies have been very impressive with five straight wins by an average margin of 21.4 points. #24 Mississippi State 10, Florida 7: Dan Mullen is making a major impact on the Bulldogs. In just his second season, he leads them to a shocking win over Florida, and earlier this season, his defense held Auburn to just 17 points, which is proving to be no easy feat this year. #25 Miami (Fla.) 28, Duke 13: The Canes continue to be inconsistent, but with many ranked teams falling, Miami's win over Duke puts it back in the Top-25 - the Hurricanes have only lost to #11 Ohio State and #16 Florida State. |
