Monday, October 11, 2010
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, has tabbed Leonard Fournette as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athletes of the Month for September. Just a freshman, Fournette is thought to be the youngest winner of the monthly winner.

Expected to be a key part of the St. Augustine football team, Fournette has exceeded all predictions by piling up 957 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in his first month of high school action. He leads the metro area in rushing and ranks third overall in the state. Fournette led the Purple Knights to a 3-1 record in September. In his first game, he tallied 238 yards with a pair of scores, but ended up on the losing end of a wild 59-56 decision to West Jefferson. He followed up with 241 yards and two scores in a 52-30 win over McDonogh 35 and 209 yards and four more touchdowns in a 46-19 victory over Warren Easton. On Sept. 25, the 6-0, 220-pounder pushed his game even higher, tallying 269 yards and four touchdowns, including runs of 75 and 81 yards in a 35-22 win over LaGrange.
Fournette (pictured right at 2011 banquet with Sugar Bowl President Lance Africk) beat out three other outstanding performers for the September honor. University of Tulsa football standout Damaris Johnson, from Destrehan High, tallied 657 all-purpose yards for the Golden Hurricane; UNO club football standout Keith Villafranco has led the Privateers to the No. 2 club ranking in the nation - UNO will compete as an NCAA program in 2011; and Loyola volleyball star Gina Gill tallied 232 kills while pacing the Wolfpack to nine victories in September.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
