TURN BACK THE CLOCK – 1969

Monday, September 13, 2010

For the second straight week, the Allstate Sugar Bowl turns back the clock to preview a current game. Georgia and Arkansas will meet in Athens this weekend in a rematch of the 1969 Sugar Bowl. To be sure, as Southeastern Conference opponents, they have met multiple times since then, but the Sugar Bowl was the first meeting between the Bulldogs and Razorbacks. Undefeated Georgia, under legendary coach Vince Dooley, came into the game favored after leading the SEC in multiple categories, but one-loss Arkansas had an opportunistic defense which had forced over 30 turnovers during the year. In this case, the underdogs continued their defensive success, forcing six turnovers and holding the Dawgs to just two points, lifting their own legendary coach, Frank Broyles, to his first Sugar Bowl victory in three tries.
